Football Stuart's introduction

For 1000 years I have been conducting a very public love-affair, with football. Using my talents in this field, which involves people-watching and anticipating the next move, moment or development… I have crafted “The Homes of Football”. As people who know me know, this has been a labour of supreme love. Yes, some people actually ask whether I like the game… football having attracted all manner of interested parties and hangers-on in the recent years as it has climbed out of the cultural dustbin. Hopefully the picture-pages here show you that I LOVE the game. After 20 years on the road visiting 3,600 grounds and matches – and not only in the UK where football is most real to me, I am of the opinion that there are 14 major themes that make up the football experience (just as there are 11 players which make up a side on the pitch). The drop-down menu above lists these themes and begins to present my football work in these ways (the search mechanism may take you to a specific team or subject).

The pictures have shown in art galleries throughout the country during a record-breaking 15-year tour, and as such they are artworks. Not every picture may strike you as ‘an artwork’ but collectively, when you start seeing them together, a huge piece of art has been assembled. Some photos work together in groups, others in pairs or even as stand-alones. The last World Cup provided me with my best experience yet, and an incredibly rich haul of ‘artworks’ and observations.

Earlier in that same year I was commissioned by EA Sports for Fifa’07 to go around Europe and Mexico photographing in six countries. My travels are fewer now, I’m happy at home rocking this cradle of the game.

More pictures will be added to the site all the time, as and when they are ripe for selection.

“The Cradle of The Game” will be released in hardback during 2010.

About purchasing images

Value and purchase of photographs. This year the world record price for the purchase of a photograph was beaten many times over.
