East of Eden, in Cumbria, there is still a game (The Waitby Cup) contested outside of the FA law but with an eye to their rules, played by farmers boys shortly after animal harvest time - farmers boys who would otherwise not get a game for a seasoned townie team. Gone is ‘the playing in wellies’ and the hospital balls. But still a game with some gusto – and indeed the farmer’s touch. Almost a century old, this Cup presented off the back of a pick-up truck has been won in 2008 by repeat winners Nateby, there to be caressed in their public house.
