LAKELAND Book Of The Year

PRESS RELEASE
July 5th, Bassenthwaite, Cumbria.
Cumbria Surrounded by Stuart Roy Clarke is announced outright winner: Illustration & Presentation, Lakeland Book Of The Year.
Sheila Fell by Cate Haste (Lady Melvyn Bragg), wins overall ‘book of the year’.

Stuart (Roy) Clarke, photographer, lives Armathwaite in Cumbria, born Berkhamsted 1961 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuart_Roy_Clarke

Says Clarke:
‘I wanted to produce a picture-story book plucked from the things which surrounded me everyday, including from my imagination, inspired by the surrounds. Hence “Cumbria Surrounded”. It was to be a big booming book – Eric Robson, broadcaster and judge, describes it as “majestic, on steroids”. Cumbria in its range and influence is vast, in English County terms, and it is a place that has swallowed up half my life since I first come here as an offcomer, from Hertfordshire, in 1985. Central to the chapterisation is “Hefted” the idea/fact that animals and even humans have in their dna homing devices. Cumbria is lauded for its beauties, often referred to as The Lake District (once considered a wild and forbidding place) and it also has an outer ring, bigger still in area and population, which has seen its share of contests – man against industry and each other. Indeed, Cumbria is at the heart of, and not on the fringes, of the British ways of life.’

Cumbria Surrounded is released as a trilogy of books announcing Stuart Roy Clarke’s own inprint SRC Books. He has formerly been published by Random House, Little Brown and Mainstream.
Excerpts from the book and interviews with Stuart Clarke can be obtained through his office.
